A big thanks to Ms. Cekaj for sending in the wind up toys for our class to disassemble. Like any good Maker, we want to know how things work. We enjoyed taking these wind up toys apart to see the inner workings. We found levers, arms, tension wires, pulleys, gears...an array of goodies.
Working in pairs, students had to disassemble the toy, label each part and determine its function. This was a fun way to experiment with informational writing and could be extended by asking kids to write an instruction manual for assembly.
If anyone has any other wind-up toys they would like to send in to the class, we will have a bucket available for the kids to disassemble at their leisure. There is much to learn through reverse engineering.
